Gender Equality

The Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) is committed to promoting gender equality, equal opportunity, and an inclusive working environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. We believe that diverse perspectives, backgrounds, and experiences strengthen our organisation and support our mission to create positive environmental change.

Our approach to gender equality is implemented through a suite of organisational policies, including our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, Human Resources Policy and Safeguarding Policy, which together provide the framework for equitable employment practices, staff wellbeing, safe working environments, and organisational accountability.

These policies are supported by our recruitment and management practices, staff onboarding, professional development, and regular policy review to ensure continuous improvement and compliance with applicable legislation and recognised good practice.

Our commitments

Equal opportunities

FEE is an equal opportunity employer. Employment decisions, including recruitment, promotion, remuneration, training, and career development are based on qualifications, competencies, experience, and organisational needs. We are committed to fair, transparent, and inclusive recruitment practices and to reducing barriers to opportunity wherever possible.

Supporting health at work

FEE recognises that employees may require additional support at different stages of their lives. Where appropriate, reasonable workplace adjustments and flexible working arrangements will be considered to support employees experiencing pregnancy, breastfeeding, menopause, fertility treatment, or other health-related needs.

Work-life balance and wellbeing

We recognise that employee wellbeing is fundamental to an inclusive workplace. FEE supports flexible working arrangements, hybrid working, family leave, and healthy work-life balance. Managers are expected to promote supportive working practices and help maintain sustainable workloads.

Leadership and organisational culture

We are committed to maintaining an organisational culture built on dignity, respect, and inclusion. We value diversity in leadership and decision-making and seek to ensure that everyone has equal opportunities to contribute, develop, and progress within the organisation.

Safe and respectful workplace

FEE has zero tolerance for discrimination, bullying, harassment, sexual harassment, abuse, or retaliation. All concerns are taken seriously and may be reported through established grievance, safeguarding, or whistleblowing procedures. Our Safeguarding Policy further supports the protection of children, young people, vulnerable adults, staff and volunteers, and sets out clear reporting and accountability mechanisms.

Learning and awareness

All new employees are introduced to FEE's HR, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Safeguarding policies during onboarding.

Monitoring and continuous improvement

We are committed to maintaining an inclusive workplace through regular review of our policies, employment practices, and organisational culture. Our focus is on ensuring equal opportunities, fostering a respectful and supportive working environment, and monitoring gender pay equality as part of our commitment to fairness and continuous improvement.

Gender equality in projects

We aim to promote inclusive participation and equal opportunities across our programmes, projects and partnerships, recognising that the needs and context of each initiative may differ.

Governance

Responsibility for implementing FEE's commitment to gender equality and inclusion rests with the Executive Team, supported by Human Resources and organisational management. These commitments are embedded across our organisational policies and management processes and are reviewed periodically to ensure they remain effective and aligned with legal requirements and good practice.
